WORKING FROM HOME CREATING A PRACTICAL WORKPLACE

BECOME AN EXPERT AT WORKING FROM HOME

Have trouble concentrating when working at home? Are you easily distracted, or are you fully focused all day? Here are some tips for maintaining your focus when working from home.

STICK TO YOUR MORNING ROUTINE

Get into your regular work routine by getting up at the same time as usual, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and why not take a short walk as if you were going to your workplace?

SET GOALS

Make your work a bit more fun by setting yourself goals for the day. What do you want to accomplish during your working day? Workwise and personally. Write them down and give yourself a pat on the back every time you get to tick off one of the things on your list. Maybe you can reward yourself by going out for a while at lunchtime?

WORK EFFICIENTLY

Make sure that you schedule your day, including your breaks. So you don’t end up wasting lots of time browsing on your mobile or watching TV. Put your phone away if it’s not essential to your work and sit in a good position with good light. Stand up and stretch when it’s time for a short break. Go and get a coffee or listen to your favourite song to give your mind a break for a while. Get some fresh air and then get back to work again. Don’t view micro-breaks as an opportunity to view episodes of your favourite series. Keep them brief.

CHOOSING YOUR WORKPLACE

Most people would probably agree that it’s rather nice to sit in bed and work. However, trying to work in a semi-recumbent position is rarely a good thing. After all, bed is somewhere that our brains associate with relaxation and sleep. So sit in a spot you associate with work instead, for example, at a desk. If you don’t have a desk, the dining table is often the best spot. Make sure you also have a comfortable chair.

CHAIRS WITH ARMRESTS

It can be useful to have a chair with armrests at a desk. The benefit is that you can relieve your shoulders by resting your lower arms on the chair and it also feels more cosy and safe sitting in a chair with arms.

More and more people are opting to have chairs with arms for dining table seating as it gives a slightly more cosy and luxurious feel.

STORAGE

If you are using your dining table as a workplace, it’s good to have some concealed storage on hand, so you can easily stow your things away at the end of the working day. Otherwise it’s all too easy for work to encroach onto home life and you continue thinking about work stuff or work too long.

A cabinet is both practical and roomy. It’s perfect for stowing your laptop, paper, pens, notepads and folders when you don’t want them out.
