Guide CHOOSING A RUG
WHICH RUG SUITS WHERE?
An easy way to create a cosy and homely feeling is through rugs. But how do you know which rug to buy? Do not make the mistake of buying a rug that is too small, as it will make the room look cramped. In our guide we give you some simple tips to help you choose a new rug.
WHICH RUG SHOULD I CHOOSE?
A rug can elevate an entire home by creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. Depending on where you want to place your new rug, there are different things to consider. Start by thinking about where you want to place the rug and what function it should serve.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE OF RUG
The size of the rug has a major impact on how the room is perceived and how much it protects the floor. When choosing the size of your new rug, use the rule of thumb that the rug should be large enough to fit all the furniture that will stand on it. At the very least, the front legs of larger pieces of furniture such as sofas and armchairs should be placed on the rug, with at least 20 cm of the rug under the sofa.
RUG FOR THE DINING AREA
A common mistake made when buying a rug for the dining set is to forget about the chairs. When you are placing a rug under a dining set, the rug should be at least 60 cm wider than the dining table, both in length and width. This gives you a good margin between the chairs and the edge of the rug, so that the chairs remain on the rug even when they are pulled out.
RECTANGULAR DINING TABLE
Our recommendation based on the furniture arrangement below with a DERRYMORE dining table in the size 205X90 cm is our DONEGAL wool rug in the size 340X240 cm.
TIPS! Choose a durable rug for the dining area and select a material such as wool that is easy to clean if an accident happens. Also remember to choose the shape of the rug based on the shape of the table.
RUG FOR THE LIVING ROOM
When buying a rug for the sofa set in the living room, you should choose a generously sized rug that creates a sense of space and gives a more cosy interior. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 40-50 cm of rug left at each short side. If the space allows, it is an advantage if the entire sofa set stands on the rug.
RUG FOR A SMALLER SOFA SET
Our recommendation based on the furniture arrangement below with a NORRIS sofa in the size 226x102 cm with a matching coffee table is our wool rug AUCKLAND in the size 340x240 cm.
TWO SOFAS FACING EACH OTHER
If you have two sofas, like RAWLINS, with a matching coffee table, a rug in size 400X300 cm is recommended.
RUG FOR A LARGER SOFA SET
The alternative is to let the sofa set stand partly on the rug; this keeps it in place and creates a cohesive whole around the sofa set. If you also have armchairs by your sofa, choose as large a rug as possible so that everything is framed and creates a unified look.
Based on the furniture arrangement below with a sofa with matching coffee table and side table as well as two armchairs, a wool rug in size 400X300 cm is large enough to work well.
TIPS! Choose a colour or pattern that you like and that matches the rest of the interior in the room. It creates harmony and a good feeling in the room.
RUG FOR THE BEDROOM
It is easy to forget a rug in the bedroom, but who does not want to put their feet on something soft when getting out of bed? We believe that most people do, and it also creates a cosy and snug feeling in the bedroom.
The rug you choose for the bedroom should be substantial. What sticks out from under the bed should feel like there is “a lot” of rug, at least 50 cm on each side. Depending a little on the feeling you want, you can choose to place a rug completely under the bed or partly under the bed so that the bedside tables stand free.
TIPS! Choose a soft rug, such as a wool rug, which makes it warm and comfortable to put your feet down on.
