THE STORY OF CANWOOD THE DESIGNER JOHANNES LIF

THE FURNITURE DESIGNER BEHIND CANWOOD LOUNGE CHAIR

Furniture designer Johannes lives and works in Gothenburg. On a daily basis, you can often find him in his creative process in the studio at Sockerbruket. It was there that the design for Rowico Home's CANWOOD lounge chair began to take shape.

CARPENTRY AND ARTISTRY

Johannes Lif is a 30-year-old designer who has carpentry and artistry in his blood. Already as a child, he had countless carpentry projects in his grandfather's artist studio. A natural step then was to study carpentry with focus on furniture at the Furniture Design program at MLU, Malmstens Linköping University. Now he works as a freelancer in furniture design.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Johannes lives in Gothenburg and often works from home, but when the design needs to be tested in reality, he goes to his studio at KKV, Konstnärernas kollektivverkstad, in Sockerbruket. Johannes has also tested some design elements for the CANWOOD lounge chair there.

– When the request to design a lounge chair for Rowico Home came up, I immediately had the idea to be inspired by the classic pin chair and the simplicity of the shaker style. I have always liked the beauty of the American shaker style. I am also inspired by the techniques of the American Amish carpenters and the manufacture of furniture, mainly pin chairs. The back is often made from split pieces of wood that have been rounded off into a round bar at the attachment to the seat. The rest of the stick is left wider to provide better support for the back. I often come back to this type of back stick as it combines form and function in such a nice way. This, in combination with the saddle girth, I have since reinterpreted for a contemporary, more Nordic context, says Johannes.
