LINDA MUNKHAMMAR
PRESERVES LIMESTONE HOUSE WITH GOTLAND FEELING
GOTLANDIC HOME WITH STYLE
In the limestone house on the Swedish island of Gotland, Linda and her family have created a home that reflects the place, nature, and life they love – with personal decor, sustainable choices, and furniture that lives with them.
PRESERVING LIMESTONE HOUSES ON GOTLAND
In a beautiful limestone house in the Gotland countryside, Linda Munkhammar lives with her family. Here, the dream of a home in harmony with nature has become a reality – both through careful renovation and personal interior design that celebrates the island's unique landscape, history, and aesthetics. Together with her husband Martin, they have created a home where soul, sustainability, and Gotlandic feeling meet in every detail.
After ten years in Stockholm, Linda and Martin chose to leave city life to return to the place where they both grew up – Gotland. They wanted to give their children, Agnes and Loa, the same freedom and closeness to nature that they had as children. The dream of gravel roads, open landscapes, proximity to the sea, and a large garden grew stronger and eventually became a reality.
The couple has renovated the charming limestone house from the ground up themselves. The house has not only become a home but also a joint project that has made them stronger, where collaboration, patience, and creativity have been crucial in solving challenges along the way.
A HOME THAT TELLS A STORY
For Linda, it is essential that the home is personal and reflects both the people who live there and the location where the house stands. Gotland is a clear source of inspiration, both in colour and material choices. From the limestone walls to the earthy tones in the interior – everything is connected and reflects the landscape outside the windows.
I am somewhat inclined to believe that one should live where they want to be when they are free.
”The Gotlandic feeling permeates the entire home. Light wood types, natural materials, and a sober colour palette create a harmonious whole. For Linda, it is important to create an environment that feels both unique and meaningful.
INTERIOR WITH SOUL AND FUNCTION
Regardless of where one lives, Linda's best tip when it comes to interior design is to surround oneself with what makes one happy and feel good. She lets the nature around the house inspire with colour and form, and combines this with design that endures over time. Proximity to materials and an awareness of quality are crucial.
Timelessness, elegance, function, and natural aesthetics – these are my guiding principles.
”Rowico Homes furniture has become a natural part of the home. The light wood of the YUMI bench reminds Linda of sun-bleached wood on the beaches of Gotland, while the dark brown wood color of the FILIPPA sideboard and YUMI nesting tables is associated with the silhouettes of Djupvik at sunset.
The previously simple home office has now been given new life as a versatile room – a lounge, an extra living room, or an extension of the dining room. Here, a sideboard, two nesting tables, and armchairs create a flexible room with multiple functions. The sideboard with hidden storage holds everything needed, and the armchairs become a calm oasis when working from home. Linda loves that the combination of furniture can change as needed – they adapt, transform, and live with them.
The furniture works just as well individually as in combination, and can easily be placed in different rooms without compromising the overall impression. Having a nice and orderly home shouldn't feel exhausting, Linda believes, if you have a well-thought-out interior, the beauty in everyday life also works.
PRESERVING THE GOTLANDIC – INSIDE AND OUT
When they decided to buy the house, the idea behind the renovation was always to preserve and save the house, not to remake it. Original stone walls, fireplaces, and floors have been uncovered, and the attic has been converted into an upper floor. The whitewashed facade and blue window frames are closely associated with the Gotlandic cultural heritage.
Every room in the house tells something about the place. The colour in the bedroom reminds Linda of her favourite beach. The Gotlandic stone beaches have inspired the living room and the kitchen's lime colour on the stone walls. Even small details – like grass in a vase or a beautifully shaped branch – are conscious choices to bring nature into the interior design.
SUSTAINABILITY AS A CORE PRINCIPLE
Linda and Martin strive for longevity – both in life and at home. Fast trends do not appeal to them; instead, they choose furniture and materials with quality, function, and aesthetics that endure over time. Every new item in the home is a conscious choice. It's not about having a lot, but about surrounding oneself with things that truly matter.
